A fan is placed inside this pit that draws radon gas into it then pumps it outside your home using PVC pipe. - A sub slab depressurization system: This method is used when homes are built over concrete slabs . When radon mitigation is required, connections are installed through the concrete floor separating the living space from the crawl space below. Another way that radon gets into homes is when it moves up through soil after being released by the breakdown of uranium found naturally in soil, rock and groundwater.
How to test for Radon?
Testing your home for radon involves testing all areas where air flows freely including basements, crawl spaces, garages and other areas where there are no operating combustion appliances like furnaces or fireplaces. The testing process involves placing a containment around the air sample collection device and closing off the area where the device is located. A short period of time (usually 48 hours) is then required for testing to be completed. There are two ways that you can do this:
Use a passive radon monitor – This type of device has no moving parts and it’s placed in an area where humans frequent like a basement or ground floor bedroom for example.
Use an active monitor – Unlike the passive monitor, it uses battery power so you will need to replace batteries periodically. This unit is usually mounted on an outside wall near the foundation and since it needs power, it should only be used when there are places to install electrical outlets nearby.
